Employee of the Month: Gina DuBois

How did you first hear about Bread for Life?

Bread for Life has been in town for a while but recently they started doing Saturday lunches so I was able to do that on the weekends when I was working. This summer I retired. (DuBois was working for an insurance company for 32 years.) Then I decided to help with the summer lunch program.

What do you like best about volunteering at Bread for Life?

I am lucky because I am able to make lunches and go out to the sites with the kids.  Just seeing the kids on a daily basis, talking with them and playing with them. The experience has been really fulfilling. I think they look forward to the adult companionship and attention. And also seeing people coming in here every day to donate things. Seeing this community come together is really great.

What do you do when you go out in the community and see the kids?

There are two sites in town (apartments) and we go out and bring healthy lunches there. We try to guide the kids to eat healthier foods (fresh fruit, yogurt, string cheese etc). Then we do a craft or play games with them. Basketball, Four Square, coloring. We spend time with them for an hour. Monday through Thursday.

What would you say to people who are considering volunteering?

I would say do it and do it with something you are passionate about!

What are you passionate about?

Feeding the hungry. And this came at a good point in my life when I needed something to do. This has been great and also so much fun.
