Bread for Life is proud to name Susan Brett as the volunteer of the month.

How did you find Bread for Life?

By accident, actually! A colleague of mine at ESPN told me about Bread for Life and Mike Soltys. I think I ended up calling Mike and asking him to tell me more about the opportunity and that’s how it happened.

What types of things do you do at Bread for Life?

I am the treasurer there. So, I pay the bills, do the financials for monthly board meetings, payroll, and even a little bit of HR. I’m learning a ton. It’s been really great.

What’s your favorite part about volunteering?

Their mission is incredible. It’s a great group of people and they complete their mission, but they also do so much more beyond that. For example, they don’t just give food, they may give someone a haircut. There’s a lot they do that extends beyond the walls and outside in the community. The whole board is exceptional. It’s a well-received and well-liked organization in town. They welcome people of all faiths, all backgrounds. And my dad is also involved. He delivers meals and even though I don’t see him there we both are involved and that’s something nice that we share.  I’m also recently married and now my husband is getting involved.

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering?

Find what you like to do and go do it! They have a lot of different programs for everyone. There’s families feeding friends, there are dinners, meal deliveries, driving…just find what interests you and go out and do it.
