Liam Duffy, fourth-grader at Strong Elementary School, gives non-perishable food items that he received as birthday presents to Eldon Hafford, executive director of Southington Bread for Life. Duffy, when asked, said he decided to ask for food instead of more traditional gifts.

“When I get presents, I don’t feel good about it. Presents only last for a short time and are forgotten about. When you do for others it makes you feel good about yourself,” he said.

The youngster also gave food to the school food drive to help feed the hungry. He said he hopes his birthday donation will inspire other children to do the same. For more information about Bread for Life, visit
