The third annual Help End Hunger Walk to benefit Southington Bread for Life will be held Saturday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., on the downtown Rails to Trails. The free walk will begin at the Southington Community YMCA Mill Street entrance. Families, individuals and teams are welcome.
This event is a collaborative effort between Bread for Life, Southington Community YMCA, LEAF CT, Activate Southington and Bobby Sprocket bike shop.
Participants are welcome to take a one-mile stroll anytime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the trailway that is stroller- and wheelchair accessible. No dogs are allowed at this event. The Help End Hunger Walk will be held rain or shine.
This fundraiser is free; however, donations are encouraged to support Bread for Life, Southington’s feeding program whose mission is “that no one may go hungry.” All proceeds will be used to feed the hungry in Southington.
While at the walk, participants are welcome to browse the CT Leaf Farmer’s Market, listen to music, have their faces painted or be entertained by the antics of Valentine the Clown (between 10 a.m. and noon).
There will also be a drawing for a hybrid bike, half-share CSA from LEAF CT, and a six-month adult YMCA membership. Raffle tickets are already on sale in the YMCA lobby and will also be sold during the walk. The drawing will be held at 1 p.m. after the walk; winners do not have to be present.
Sponsorships are still available: $1,000 Hunger Warrior (provides 335 hot meals delivered to the homebound friends who qualify); $500 Hunger Champion (provides 165 breakfasts to children in Southington Schools who otherwise would start the day without nourishment); and $250 Hunger Hero (provides 85 hot lunches to qualifying citizens at the weekday lunch program at Friendship Lodge on Main Street).
Bread for Life was founded in 1984 and at first served only lunch meals three days a week. During the past 30 years, the nonprofit has dramatically expanded. In 2014, Bread for Life provided more than 35,900 meals to qualified clients.
Walk registration can be completed online at www.southingtonbreadforlife.com or by calling (860) 276-8389.
The mission of Bread for Life is to provide food, fellowship and a sense of dignity to those in need. Bread for Life is a 501c3 nonprofit United Way Agency.
