Local children up to age 18 will be able to receive free lunch this summer courtesy of Southington Bread for Life.

Through a generous donation, nutritional meals will be served weekdays at noon at three locations: Wheeler Village, 97 Wheeler Village; Summer Brook Apartments, 35 Darling St., and Memorial Park, Woodruff Street. The program began June 29 and will continue until Aug. 21.

The prepackaged “grab and go” meals include a fruit (or juice box), vegetable, grain and protein. Youngsters do not have to qualify to receive a free lunch.

Bread for Life has offered the summer meal program during the last two summers and has expanded it this year to three locations. “Offering these meals is an additional way that Bread for Life continues to meet its mission, ‘that no one may go hungry,’” said Eldon Hafford, executive director.

The mission of Bread for Life is to provide food, fellowship and a sense of dignity to those in need. In the past year alone, Bread for Life served more than 35,000 meals to Southington residents.
