Officials from Southington Bread for Life and 19 other area nonprofits were surprised and grateful to receive unexpected donations of $1,000 over the last several weeks. Main Street Community Foundation, based in Bristol, presented the funds in honor of its 20th anniversary. Programs were selected in each of the six towns the philanthropic organization serves: Bristol, Burlington, Plainville, Plymouth, Southington and Wolcott.

Susan Sadecki, foundation president and chief executive officer, and Jarre Betts, vice president of programming, made the check presentations at a ceremony held Aug. 30 at the town hall. Southington recipients were the Arc of Southington, Bread for Life, Margaret C. Griffin Child Development Center and the United Way of Southington.

Eldon Hafford, Bread for Life executive director, said he received an unexpected phone call from Sadecki who notified him of the good news.

“She asked what the grant of $1,000 would be used for. As our donations are less than last year, this grant will enable us to continue feeding the homeless, seniors, shut-ins and children,” Hafford said. “Main Street Foundation has always been there to support the local communities. They will never know how important the grant is at this time. I want to thank the board of directors for recognizing Bread for Life and the work that it does in Southington for the less fortunate.”

Bread for Life’s mission is to help people who struggle to put food on the table for themselves, their children and their families. In the past year, more than 37,000 meals were served.

“Since 1984, we have worked to make sure that those in our community, who face these difficulties, find solace and strength in the support we provide. It is only with the generosity of others, that we are able to accomplish all that we do,” Hafford said.
